Marnie Tjaden - May 24, 1932 - June 20, 2005

Marnie Tjaden, age 73 of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, June 20, 2005, at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Marnie was born on May 24, 1932, to Archie and Ardis Lemker in Gillette, Wyoming. During the days of her youth which were spent in Wyoming, she was very much a fan of the many rodeos held in that area. She was later transplanted to Iowa where she lived with her parents on their farm near Harris, attending school there and starring on the Harris High basketball team.

On November 4, 1950, Marnie was united in marriage to Loren Tjaden at Jackson, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with four sons: Dave (deceased), Larry (deceased), Steve, and Dan, and one daughter, Lori. During her life, Marnie worked at Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator and as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Buena Vista County Hospital, Newell Good Samaratin Center, and Methodist Manor.

Marnie loved her family and treasured the time she spent with them. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities and watching them grow up. Marnie led many garage concerts featuring her on guitar, Elizabeth singing, Ben playing the soup kettle and Grandpa playing the accordion. Marnie also loved to dance and she and Loren took advantage of every opportunity to spend time on the dance floor. Even after Alzheimer’s claimed so much of her life and her memories, Marnie still was able to dance and enjoyed doing so for a number of years into the disease.

Marnie also enjoyed ceramics and painting and spent two years at Buena Vista College pursuing a degree in Art. She owned and operated The Artist’s Palette in Storm Lake featuring her own art and that of other local artists for sale.

Summertime outdoor activities gave Marnie great pleasure. She enjoyed gardening and canning the harvest. She also treasured her pets, many of which were strays she adopted.

Left to cherish her memory are sons: Steve and wife Roxanne Tjaden of Lakeside, Iowa, Dan and wife Julie Tjaden of Storm Lake, her daughter, Lori and husband Mark Lewis of Avoca, Iowa; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ben Tjaden of Lakeside and step-grandchildren; Kelly Smith of Jeffersonville, Kentucky, Kim and John Shunnarah of Louisville Kentucky, Cory and Peggy Kock of Louisville, Kentucky, and Marc and Belinda Kock of Birmingham, Alabama.

Preceding Marnie in death were her parents, husband Loren, infant son Larry, son Dave, and daughter-in-law Beverly Tjaden.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 27, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating.
