Marlys Brown, age 68, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died August 7, 2005, in Storm Lake.
Marlys Ann Johnson was born March 3, 1937, to Henry “Hank” and Catherine (Koppie) Johnson in Mallard, Iowa. She was baptized in the Roman Catholic faith as a baby in 1937 and later confirmed in the church. She remained a faithful member of the Catholic Church throughout her life.
Marlys received her education in the Laurens, Iowa, school system, graduating from Laurens High School in 1955. On October 29, 1955, she was united in marriage to Jens “Pete” Brown. Their union was blessed with four children: James “Jim”, Gary, Richard and Thane.
Marlys was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake at the time of her death, but held offices over the years at the Catholic Church in Laurens. She was also a member of BPOE Lodge (Elks) in Storm Lake and her Birthday Club. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and playing cards and dominoes. Marlys loved flowers and liked to spend time in Bible study with Thane. Family and friends always were first in Marlys’ life. However, and she especially treasured the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. Her presence will be missed by all those who loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: James “Jim” and wife Lisa Brown of Storm Lake, Gary Brown of Linn Grove, Iowa, Richard and wife April Brown of Storm Lake and Thane and wife Kelly Brown of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Anson and Austin Brown, Kate and Jordan Brown, Richelle and Ashley Brown, Nam and Lan Huong Brown; brothers: Merlyn “Bud” and wife Elvie Brown of St. Louis, Missouri, and Ron and wife Rosie Johnson of Laurens; half-sisters: Helen Vaudt of Harlingen, Texas, Louella and husband Gene Ryen of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Viola Koster of Dover, Arkansas; brother-in-law Lee Pomeroy of Spirit Lake, Iowa; as well as extended family and a host of friends.
Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Catherine Johnson; her husband of more than 42 years, Jens “Pete” Brown, on June 16, 1999; two sisters: Arlene Pomeroy and Joleen “Romelle” Johnson; half-sisters: Ivadel Mumford and Genevieve Critser; and brother-in-law Albert “Jake” Vaudt.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2005, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. A Legion of Mary Rosary Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7: 00 p.m., both at the funeral home.
