Arvilla E. Degner - Aug. 1, 1907 - Oct. 9, 2005

Arvilla E. Degner, age 98, of Newell, Iowa, died Sunday, October 9, 2005, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Arvilla E. Gloss was born August 1, 1907, to August W. and Anna (Fippinger) Gloss in Bellwood, Illinois. Her family moved from Illinois to Minnesota where she received her early education. The family later moved to Iowa and Arvilla completed her education in the Albert City and Newell schools.

On February 22, 1928, Arvilla was united in marriage to Frederick W. Degner at the Congregational Parsonage in Newell. Their union was blessed with five children: Freddie, Barbara, Ruth, Robert and David. Arvilla was a loving wife and devoted mother who treasured her family. She was a homemaker who loved to bake. She was especially known for her good bread and her wonderful apple pies. She also enjoyed embroidery in her free time.

Arvilla was confirmed at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Albert City and was currently a member of the United Methodist Church. She was active in the WSCS in Varina and Newell.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Freddie (Thelma) Degner of Albert City; Barbara (Roger) Waggie of Storm Lake, Iowa; Robert (Barbara) Degner of Fonda, Iowa; David (Ellen) Degner of Newell and a foster child, Eleanor Martin of Long Beach, California. She is further survived by 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.

Arvilla was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fred, who died in 1972; daughter and son-in-law Ruth and Leonard Paulson; three infant granddaughters: Susan Kay Beilby, Elizabeth Ann Paulson and Heidi Paulson; and one half-brother, Clyde Timke.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 12, 2005, at 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Newell with Reverend David Schumann officiating. Burial will be in the Varina Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2005, from 6-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
