Edith Kania - Aug. 13, 1926 - Feb. 13, 2004

Edith Kania, age 77, of Storm Lake died on Friday, February 13, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Edith Nielsen was born on August 13, 1926, on a farm west of Newell to Jens and Ottilda (Christensen) Nielsen. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith on September 26, 1926, and confirmed on Palm Sunday of 1941. Edith was a member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell.

As a child, Edith lived with her parents on their family farm. She attended rural schools, the last six years at Providence Consolidated School where she graduated from high school. Edith took secretarial courses by correspondence and at night school. She enjoyed her work and meeting so many different people during her career as a secretary and bookkeeper. Edith retired in 1987 to stay home and take care of her mother.

Edith was married in 1953 to Stanley F. Kania. One daughter, Kari, blessed their union. Edith was a devoted mother to her daughter, despite the Kania’s divorce in 1955, providing a warm and loving home for her daughter and for her mother.

Edith found much to make life interesting and happy. She and Kari prized their wonderful summer vacation trips together during Kari’s school years, visiting places like California, Colorado, the Black Hills, and Wisconsin. Edith also cherished memories of a trip that she and her mother took to Denmark to visit family there. She enjoyed working in her yard, growing flowers and gardening. Edith was particularly fond of roses and delighted in encouraging them to bloom.

But most beloved to Edith was her family. She treasured every moment she was able to spend with them. Her grandchildren were precious and very dear to her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kari and husband David Jansen of Lakeside, Iowa; grandchildren: Shane Jansen of Omaha, NE, and Kimberly Jansen of Tampa, FL; and many other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Edith in death were her parents and her brother Tage Nielsen and her brother and sister-in-law, Carl G. and wife Vera Nielsen; and her sister, Anne Carpenter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kania will be held on Monday, February 16, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be held in the Newell Cemetery under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m on Sunday, February 15, 2004, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Friends wishing to send condolences may do so online.
