Loren Tjaden - May 18, 1930 - Mar. 1, 2004
Loren Tjaden, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, March 1, 2004, at his home near Sulphur Springs in Buena Vista County, Iowa.
Loren Tjaden was born on May 18, 1930, to Earl and Myrtle (Davids) Tjaden at Ocheyedan, Iowa. He grew up on his parents’ farm near Ocheyedan, attending school there.
On November 4, 1950, Loren was united in marriage to Myrtle I. (Marnie) Lemker at Jackson, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with three sons, Steve, Dan and Dave, and one daughter, Lori. During his life, Loren worked at Sibley Concrete in Sibley, at Hy-Grade and IBP in Storm Lake. He also enjoyed helping out his neighbors who farmed.
Loren loved his family and treasured the time he was able to spend with them. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching them as they were growing up. Family activities were precious to Loren, and he liked to have his family gathered near at the holidays, especially at Christmas when he would make Tom & Jerry’s eggnog.
Loren was a man who liked to be outdoors, experiencing nature first-hand. He took great pleasure in fishing, hunting and playing golf. Loren loved dogs and owned quite a few, many of which were black Labradors. He usually named his dogs Duke except for one female that he called Duchess.
He also loved agriculture and was an avid gardener who put great effort into growing big tomatoes every year. He liked to preserve the bounty he brought forth in his garden, canning everything possible. His pickle relish, horseradish and potato bologna were exceptionally good and welcomed by his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marnie of Storm Lake; sons: Steve and wife Roxanne Tjaden of Storm Lake, Dan and wife Julie Tjaden of Storm Lake, and Dave Tjaden of Fitzpatrick, AL; his daughter, Lori and husband Mark Lewis of Avoca; two grandchildren, Ben and Elizabeth Tjaden of Storm Lake; and step-grandchildren: Marc and Belinda Kock of Hoover, AL, Kelly and Billy Smith of Jeffersonville, IN, Kim and John Shunnarah of Louisville, KY, and Cory and Peggy Kock of Louisville, KY; and many extended family members and friends.
Preceding Loren in death were his parents; his infant son, Larry; and his daughter-in-law, Beverly Tjaden.
Services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake with Pastor Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery near Ocheyedan, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call on Thursday, February 4, 2004, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friends who desire to send condolences may do so online.
