Harald (Harold) Haahr Grau - Dec. 18, 1914 - Mar. 6, 2004

Harald (Harold) Haahr Grau, age 89, of Newell, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Harold was born December 18, 1914, to Jorgen C. and Anna C. (Haahr) Grau northeast of Newell in Coon Township in Buena Vista County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Danish Lutheran Church in Newell. Harold attended country school and in later years went to winter school at Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa.

On January 24, 1948, Harold was united in marriage to Evelyn Waskom in Wickenburg, Arizona. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Joann.

Harold's first job was running a service station close to the family farm. During the World War II years, he worked as a diesel mechanic at Anderson Ranch Dam and towed cars across the mountains. He later owned and operated the Grau Motors and Implement in Newell, representing Chrysler, Plymouth and Allis Chalmers lines. He retired in 1975.

Harold enjoyed the outdoors and liked fishing and hunting. He was a fan of car racing and especially enjoyed playing golf with his friends and relatives. He found great pleasure in having coffee and conversation sessions with his friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Evelyn; his daughter Joann Grau and John Beckner of Grand Junction, CO; brothers: Solon and wife Marjorie Grau of Ames, IA, and Leo and wife Bernice Grau of Storm Lake, IA; sisters: Ruth Bennett of Sun City, AZ, Dorothy and husband Richard Stilling of Northridge, CA, and Ardyth Barber of Okoboji, IA; sisters-in-law: Kay Grau of Storm Lake, IA, Mildred Rogers of Newell, IA, Lucile Schnirring of Sac City, IA, and Crystal and husband Don Larimer of St. Louis, MO; a special God Son, Tony Weiland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members and friends.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents; brothers: Holger and Theodore; brothers-in-law: Dean Rogers, Glen Schnirring, H. G. "Ben" Bennett, Charles Weiland and Jerry Barber; sister-in-law Leona Grau; and his niece Kristi Emmick.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell with Reverend Lillette Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

There will be no visitation held. Friends who wish to send condolences to the family may do so online.
