Jack L. Wells - May 27, 1924 - Apr. 20, 2004

Jack L. Wells, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Jack was born on May 27, 1924, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Edward and Gretchen (Kreidler) Wells. He lived with his parents in Madison, Nebraska, where Jack graduated from high school in 1941. He went on to serve his country in the United States Navy during World War II, spending most of his time on the carrier USS Wake Island in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged following the war. Jack then studied at the University of Nebraska where he received his bachelor’s degree in business and his master’s degree in music.

On April 24, 1947, Jack was united in marriage to E. Helen Gloor at Altadena, CA. Their marriage was blessed with three children: a son, Mike, and two daughters, Barbara and Kathy.

Music was Jack’s life and also a great source of pleasure. He taught music in Nebraska, was manager of the musical merchandise department of a retail music store in Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Storm Lake where he was part owner in Mid-Bell Music. Jack liked to practice his music in many capacities including playing in numerous dance bands. He was a mentor and valued friend to many area music teachers. He also enjoyed golfing, motorcycling and biking. Jack was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church and the Jewel Masonic Lodge #309 in Storm Lake. A loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather, Jack cherished his family.

His family includes his wife, Helen of Storm Lake; his son, Mike and wife Barb Wells of Storm Lake; two daughters: Barbara and husband John Dulmage of Toledo, Ohio, and Kathy and husband Roger Hansen of Springville, Arizona; four grandchildren: Noël Holman, Benjamin Wells, Roger Hansen, Jr., and Michelle Hansen; one brother, Ed and wife Lois Wells of Eau Claire, WI; and many extended family members and friends.

Preceding Jack in death were his parents, Edward and Gretchen Wells.

Friends are invited to gather for a celebration of Jack’s life at the Embers Lounge in Storm Lake on Friday, April 23, 2004, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, where the family will be present in the Embers' party room. Private family memorial services will be held in Minnesota at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Jack’s memory may be honored with contributions to the Storm Lake Music Booster Crescendo Club, c/o Storm Lake High School, 621 Tornado Drive, Storm Lake, Iowa 50588.
