Duane Haack - Aug. 13, 1940 - Apr. 25, 2004

Duane Glen Haack, age 63, of Schaller, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Duane was born August 13, 1940, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Herman and Eldora (Hazel) Haack. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature, after which he served his country as a commissioned officer in the U. S. Army. Duane had a distinguished career spanning over 20 years, which included completing a master’s degree in English at the University of Wisconsin—Madison in order to teach at West Point. He served in Korea and had two tours of duty in Europe. Upon retirement in 1987, Lt. Colonel Haack returned home to Iowa in 1987. He continued his passion for education by becoming an assistant professor at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. For over a decade he challenged and inspired his students.

On February 15, 1992, Duane was married to Cheryl Pyle at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller, Iowa. In 1994, Cheryl opened Cherri’s Antiques in Schaller. This new venture consumed his time. With great detail, he enjoyed speaking of their acquired merchandise.

Duane was an avid reader, focusing on philosophical texts, western and fantasy novels. He loved music and his toes even tapped in his sleep. He whistled like a bird’s song and sang in a resounding baritone. His serious intellectual side was balanced with a quick wit and joking manner.

A loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, Duane cherished his family.

Duane is survived by his wife of 12 blessed years; his two daughters: Kimberly Beeby and her husband, Daniel of Pensacola, FL, and Djana Trofimoff and her husband, Alex, of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Shannon Beeby, Rebecca Beeby, Christine Beeby, Anna Trofimoff, and Nikolas Trofimoff; and his sisters: Darlene Garrels of Wall Lake and Dianna Waldstein and her husband, Scott, of Early.

Also beloved by him and mourning his loss are Cheryl’s six children: Christina Frank of Schaller, Natalie Ehrp of Ankeny, Chad Ehrp of Schaller, Donelle Pyle of Savannah, GA, Stephanie Al-Tamimi and her husband, Kyle, of McCook Lake, SD, and Lacey Pyle of Indianola; seven grandchildren: Kay Lynn Frank, Laura Frank, Nathan Frank, Taya Hinkeldey, Miranda Morrow, Mindy Ehrp and Austin Ehrp; many nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and very special friends.

Preceding Duane in death were his parents, his brother and wife, Donald and Donna Haack, and his brother-in-law, Lennis Garrels.

Duane touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 29, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Early. Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, after 4:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
