Lance R. Garlock - Sept. 4, 1929 - May 5, 2004

Lance R. Garlock, age 74, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Lance Robert Garlock was born September 4, 1929, in Fonda, Iowa, to Burnell and Opal (Stetham) Garlock. He spent his childhood in his parents’ home in Fonda, attending school there and then graduating from Fonda High School. Lance attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for three years, then Drake University in Des Moines for 3 more years to earn his B.S. in Pharmacy. During the time he was a student at Buena Vista, he worked at Ireland Drug in Storm Lake.

Lance served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

On May 26, 1957, he was united in marriage to Donna R. Sporleder in Lake City, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children: Lance Greg, Valerie and Gale. Lance was devoted to his family and treasured the time he could spend with them.

As a registered pharmacist, Lance, along with Donna, owned and operated Odebolt Drug in Odebolt from 1966 through 1986 where Lance was a community leader and member of the Odebolt Rotary Club. During his retirement years, Lance helped out area pharmacists at drugstores in Sac City and in the northwest Iowa area.

Lance was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church and the Kiwanis Beavers in Storm Lake. He was an avid fisherman who loved every moment he could spend with a fishing line in his hands.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna of Storm Lake; son, Lance G. Garlock of Storm Lake; daughters: Valerie and husband Duane Kavanaugh of Groton, SD, and Gale and husband Pat McEvoy of Elgin, MN; four grandchildren: Spenser and Mikki Kavanaugh and Reece and Braeden McEvoy; one nephew, two nieces, and many other extended family and friends.

Preceding Lance in death were his parents, and a brother, Dale E. Garlock.

A memorial honoring Lance has been established. Memorials may be sent to the Garlock family.

Memorial Service will be Friday, May 7, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Amvets Post #66 will present the flag. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Friends who wish to send condolences to the family may do so online.
