Ted Van Grootheest - Apr. 30, 1941 - May 24, 2004

Ted Van Grootheest, age 63, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, May 24, 2004, at his home.

Ted was born April 30, 1941, at Doon, Iowa, to Gerrit and Henrietta (Van Beek) Van Grootheest, Sr. During his childhood, he lived with his parents at their rural home near Doon. Ted attended Garfield #2 Country School and Doon High School.

On May 29, 1959, Ted was united in marriage to Helene De Boer in Rock Valley, Iowa. Their union was blessed with one son, Terry, and one daughter, Pamela.

Ted was Buena Vista County Assessor from 1981 until his death. Prior to coming to Storm Lake, he held the office of Deputy Assessor in Sioux County, Iowa, from 1979 – 1981. Ted attained both his ICA and RES Designations in 1984, and in 1992 received the Certified General Real Property Appraiser Certification. In October of 2000, Ted was surprised, honored and humbled to receive the Outstanding Member Award at the Annual Conference in Des Moines. Ted has served the Institute of Iowa Certified Assessors as a Board Member, Vice-President and President. He was a member of ISAA, IAAO, Northwest Iowa Chapter IAAO and IICA, serving on many committees: Ways & Means, Executive Board, Equalization, Communications, Program and most recently on the Technology Committee with the Department of Revenue, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Web Page Committee and Chairman of the Public Relations/Communications Committee. He was very well-respected by his peers, always willing to assist anyone or help with any project.

He was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, and previously belonged to the 1st Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa, and the 1st Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa, where he held the offices of Deacon, Sunday School Secretary, Couples Club President and was a Youth Group sponsor. Ted was also a Cub Scouts Leader in Orange City.

Ted was interested in computers, liked to travel and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, especially making furniture. As a couple, he and Helene built and remodeled many homes.

A loving husband and devoted father, Ted treasured his family. He delighted in any time spent with his family, but especially prized the camping and in skiing trips with his children and summer vacations taken with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Helene; his son, Terry and wife Teresa Van Grootheest of Delphos, OH; his daughter Pamela and husband Howard Vlieger of Maurice, IA; grandchildren: Sarah, David and Rachael Vlieger, Abby, Emily and Taylor Van Grootheest and Justin, Marcus and Dylan Krendl; brothers: Gerrit and wife Jeanette Van Grootheest, Jr. and Albert and wife Grace Van Grootheest; sisters: Betty and husband Arie Den Hoed, and Mary and husband Jim Van Surksum; and many other relatives and friends.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter; his brother, Harvey Van Grootheest; and his father-in-law, Art De Boer.

Funeral Services will be Friday, May 28, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley, Iowa. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 27, 2004, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present from 7:00-9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
