Mavis R. Peterson - May 19, 1927 - Feb. 6, 2010

Mavis R. Peterson, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Mavis Rosalie Strader, the daughter of James Fredrick and Cedellia (Mayland) Strader, was born in Marathon, Iowa, on May 19, 1927. She lived her youth and received her education at Marathon, graduating from the Marathon High School. Mavis continued her education at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where she received her nursing degree.

On September 23, 1948, Mavis was united in marriage to Dwayne Alan Peterson in Storm Lake, Iowa. This couple was blessed with three children: Tim, Dan and Vicki. Following their wedding, they relocated to Loveland, Colorado, prior to moving to Laurens, Iowa, in 1952. The Peterson’s lived in Laurens until 1963 when they came to make their home in Storm Lake. While residing in Storm Lake, Mavis was a registered nurse at the Storm Lake Hospital. She retired from nursing in 1972. In her retirement years, Mavis had resided at the McCord Manor in Storm Lake, Wel-Life in Alta, Iowa for one year, and since December of 2008, Mavis has been a resident of the Sunset Knoll Nursing Home in Aurelia, Iowa.

She was a longtime member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Mavis had a love of animals and also enjoyed watching sports on television, especially football and basketball. Mavis will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew her for her wit, candor, and jovial sense of humor.

Those who will always love and cherish her memory include her children: Tim and Sharon Peterson of Mansfield, Texas; Dan and Karen Peterson of Hurst, Texas; Vicki (Peterson) Dale of Reno, Nevada; her grandchildren: Shawn, Mindy, Ryan, Bryan, Amanda, Gavin, Bailey, Lindsey and Michael; ten great grandchildren: Troy, Melia, Nathaniel, Avery, Elisha, Callan, Piper, Jordan, Austen and Makaila; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Fred Jr. and C.L. “Stub”; and two sisters: Joyce and Faye.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Monday, February 8, 2010, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Arrangements are under the direction of Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
