Lorna M. Jewell - May 10, 1923 - July 22, 2004
Lorna M. Jewell, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Lorna was born on May 10, 1923, the daughter of Edward W. and Edna M. (Kischer) Meinking, on the family farm south of Albert City. Pastor Rink baptized her on June 10, 1923, at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Albert City, and she was confirmed in 1937 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell by Pastor P.G. Stephan. She attended country school, rural Storm Lake, and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1940. She continued her education at a commercial college in Des Moines. She worked as an office worker after the war.
On July 6, 1947, Pastor Hoemann united Lorna and Bruce M. Jewell in marriage at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell. They were blessed with a son Bryan. Lorna was a loving wife and homemaker and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her son, Bryan Jewell and his wife Kay of Spirit Lake, IA; grandson, Brandon Jewell also of Spirit Lake; a brother, Robert Meinking and his wife Betty of Fort Dodge, IA; a sister, Joan Ohlsen and her husband Wilbur of Rockwell City, IA; and a sister-in-law, Betty Stewart and her husband Jim of Sioux City, Iowa.
Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Edna Meinking; and her husband, Bruce Jewell on July 23, 1998.
Funeral services for Lorna will be held Monday, July 26th, 11:00 am, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Reverend Michael Harman will officiate. Reva and Dale Arends will sing a duet accompanied by Donna Larsen. Trudy Peterson and Janene Grote will take care of the flower arrangements. Pallbearers include the following: Brandon Jewell, Art Mulder, Darren Voss, Todd Ohlsen, Leonard Peterson, and Ronnie Jorgensen. Burial will be at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.
