Elva Frerichs, age 81, of Newell, Iowa, died July 29, 2004.
Elva Virginia (Petersen) Frerichs, the daughter of Nels and Agnes (Andersen) Petersen was born September 8, 1922, on a farm in Sac County, Iowa.
Elva was baptized in 1922, at the Nain Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1936 where she remained a life long member. She attended country school through the fifth grade. She completed her grade school and high school education at Newell Consolidated School, graduating in 1940. Following her graduation she attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa.
On August 13, 1943, she was united in marriage to Warren M. Frerichs in Seattle, Washington. Two children were born to this union.
Through the years she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper, the final 28 years as bookkeeper at the Newell Cooperative Elevator. Her organizational skills were shared with the town when she co-chaired the Centennial celebration in 1969 and with Nain Lutheran Church when she chaired its Centennial in 1984.
Elva’s hobbies included collecting plates and teacups, quilting, and making church banners. She loved to do things for her church. She taught Sunday school for many years, served as Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the church council, and a member of the LCA. Elva was also a member of the Danish Sisterhood and the American Legion Auxiliary.
On July 29, 2004, she passed away following a long illness. She is survived by her husband, Warren; daughter, Mary and husband, Dan Marler of Hansville, Washington; sisters Betty Christensen of Newell, Verna Witter and husband Joe of Plainfield, Illinois, brother Virgil Petersen and wife Donna of Loveland, Colorado; sister-in-law Norma and husband Elmer Cunningham of Morro Bay, California. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Elva was preceded in death by an infant daughter Nancy Ann, her parents and a brother-in-law Harry Christensen.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 1, 2004, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
Funeral Services will be Monday, August 2, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell with Reverend Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
