Lowell Larson - Dec. 18, 1920 - Sept. 4, 2004
Lowell G. Larson, age 83, of Storm Lake died on Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake of lymphoma.
Lowell Grant Larson was born December 18, 1920, on a farm southwest of Alta, Iowa, to Uno S. Larson and Ellen (Johnson) Larson. He lived with his parents on that same farm until March 1, 1930, when the family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa.
During his school years, Lowell attended Maple Valley #9 Country School, south of Hanover for 2 years prior to completing his grade school at Storm Lake West School and Storm Lake Junior High School. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1938 as class Salutatorian. The class of 1938 was the largest of that time having 93 graduates.
On November 10, 1943, Lowell was united in marriage to Jane E. Hatch at the Hatch farm southeast of Alta, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Gordon, Deanna and Gary.
Lowell was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alta before transferring his membership to the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. He was an active member who held the following positions: Sunday school teacher, Financial Secretary for Alta United Methodist Church for 17 years, Official Board, Trustee as well as assisting with other committees over the years.
Lowell was called to service during WWII on September 2, 1942. He was sent to U.S. Army finance training in Lincoln, Nebraska. On January 9, 1944, Lowell received orders to go to Camp Howze in Texas for combat/infantry training. He left Fort Meade, Maryland, in March on the Queen Mary for South Hampton, England, where shortly after he received more combat training in a camp in Germany. On Friday, the 13th, Lowell was transferred back to a finance office in Germany. He worked in finance offices in Germany and France until March 1946, when he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
Following his return, Lowell worked as an accountant in Storm Lake for Dlugosch Motors (1946-1958 when the garage closed), Noble Manufacturing Co. in Sac City (1958-1959), Thermogas Co. in Storm Lake (1959-1969), and Buena Vista County R.E.C. in Storm Lake (1969-until his retirement in 1985).
Lowell enjoyed golf, sports and attending his children’s activities in school and college. He cherished the time he spent on family vacations, and especially the many bus tours he and Jane took throughout the U.S. including Hawaii. He also had great joy attending the State High School basketball tournaments in Des Moines and watching the Tornadoes play while Gary was a member of the team. Lowell was active in the West School P.T.A., Storm Lake Citizens Advisory Board, Storm Lake Park Board, Little League Coaching Staff, Methodist Manor Care Review Board, American Heart Association and the Storm Lake Lions Club for over 40 years (serving as President for 1 year and Secretary/Treasurer for 39 years).
Those blessed to have shared in Lowell’s life are his wife, Jane E. (Hatch) Larson of Storm Lake; son, Gary L. Larson and his wife Sally of Shoreview, Minnesota; daughter, Deanna K. Larson of Storm Lake; grandson, Matthew T. Larson of Madison, Wisconsin; niece, Mary Ann Zweibahmer of Schaller; great niece, Ann Marie Fiorendino and her husband Gene of Storm Lake; great nephew, Ben McVinua of Storm Lake; great-great nephew, Tanner Fiorendino of Storm Lake; sister-in-law, Doris Patterson of Alta as well as a host of other extended family members and friends.
Preceding Lowell in death are his infant son, Gordon Larson; parents, Uno and Ellen Larson; brother, Ilo Larson; sister-in-law, Pauline Larson; nephew, Scott E. Larson; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Hatch and Thayer D. Patterson.
Lowell was a loving and devoted husband and father. Throughout his life, he strived to do his best. His faith in God was a source of strength. Even the last days of his life, Lowell considered himself to be a lucky man. He was grateful for his family and friends and for the many other blessings God had bestowed upon him.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at 10:30 am at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the B.V. Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
