Merlyn Darling, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, October 15, 2004, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Merlyn Charles Darling was born July 6, 1915, at Sac City to Charles H. and Elsie (Larimer) Darling. He received his education in Newell and graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1932.

He worked on the farm, and in 1940, he and Edna Carlson were united in marriage in the Presbyterian Church in Fonda. Two children, Don and Dee Anne joined the family. Merlyn and Edna would go on to spend 64 years of marriage together. They moved to Pomeroy in 1941 where Merlyn worked for the Standard Oil Company as a tank wagon salesman.

In 1942, Merlyn and Edna went to San Diego, California, where both worked for Consolidated Aircraft building B-24 Liberator bombers for the war effort. After two and a half years, they returned to Fonda where Merlyn was again in the tank wagon business for Farm Service Co. and Mobil Oil Co. He loved to sell!

Merlyn retired in 1975 because of back problems.

His church came first. Merlyn and Edna were active members of the Church of Christ in Fonda. They moved to Storm Lake in October of 1975 and joined the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.

Merlyn loved to play cards, talk, laugh, travel, listen to music and watch the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed life as long as he could and his good natured manner will be missed. He will be at peace.
