Genevieve "Jane" Candor Walby - Mar. 11, 1911 - May 24, 2003

Genevieve (Jane) Candor Walby, age 92, of Storm Lake, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Jane was born March 11, 1911, in Cogswell, North Dakota, the youngest of four children born to Robert Arthur and Viola Kendall Candor. She attended Battle Creek (Michigan) High School her junior and senior years, graduating in 1928. She then attended Battle Creek Community College for two years before transferring to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she was affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1932 with a degree in dietetics. She did a one-year internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital and then accepted a job in Foley, Minnesota, as the county home extension agent.

On April 25, 1936, Jane married Alden M. Walby at her family home in Cogswell. They lived in Oakes, North Dakota, until the spring of 1945 when they moved to Alexandria, Minnesota. In March of 1951, Jane returned to the University of Minnesota to take further dietetics courses. Upon completion, she accepted a job as the first dietitian at Buena Vista County Hospital until her retirement in 1970.

During her life, Jane was active in Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Tuesday Study Club, SERPACI, Eastern Star, Storm Lake Centennial activities, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter JD. She sewed over 1,700 garments for Hillcrest Family Services in Dubuque, Iowa, and Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. She wrote her memoirs in a booklet, “I Remember When,” with proceeds going to fund a journalism scholarship at Buena Vista University.

Jane is survived by two daughters, Ida Mae (Ren) Holland of Little Falls, Minnesota, and Ann (Ray) Steben of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden, of 54 years, one sister, two brothers, and her parents.

A memorial service and celebration of Jane’s life will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Storm Lake, on Tuesday, May 27, at 7:30pm. Rev. Duane Queen will be officiating. Following the service there will be a time of fellowship held at the church.

There will be a private family interment at Old Sargent Cemetery in Cogswell, North Dakota. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be designated to Lakeside Presbyterian Church or Hillcrest Family Services of Dubuque. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
