Eldor Sump - May 31, 1913 - June 7, 2003

Eldor Sump of Albert City died June 7, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Hospital in Storm Lake.

Eldor Dietrick Daniel Sump was born on May 31, 1913, to John & Mary (Rurode) Sump at rural Clarinda, IA, in Page County. He was baptized on June 22, 1913.

He first attended the Center Public School where there were only 15 pupils. He walked 1/2 mile carrying his dinner bucket or pail with his noon lunch. Each morning they stood outside by the flagpole and said the Pledge of Allegiance.

In 1925-1927, he attended the Immanuel Lutheran School where they had a religious class each day along with their other classes. He rode in a top buggy (which was open in the front) for 3 1/2 miles. It was very cold in the winter! There were 70 pupils and only one teacher! They had school all day and sat in double desks. Eldor sat with the same boy for three years. Eldor was confirmed in 1927. His chosen Bible verses were Rev. 2:10 & Rev. 3:11. During his teens, he enjoyed his church youth group, singing in the choir and playing on and managing softball teams.

Eldor loved it when he could start farming with his dad, which he did at an early age. His family bought their first tractor, a GP John Deere in 1929. He and his brother Herbert later bought a 1939 Allis Chalmers together. He enjoyed farming the hills of Page County for many years.

Eldor began visiting relatives in northwest Iowa and met Anna Louise Franzmeier. They were married on Dec. 17, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake. They first farmed on the “Nehring Farm”, west of Albert City and then on their “home place” southwest of Albert City.

This union was blessed with three daughters, Judith Ann, Jean Marie and Janet Kay.

Eldor enjoyed raising cattle, hogs, horses and a crop each year. He held various church offices during this time. He especially enjoyed being on the church dartball team and visiting with players from other congregations. He continued this until he was 80 years old! He loved his family and friends and always enjoyed going down to Page County to visit and reminisce.

He and Anna farmed until the fall of 1975 when they retired to Albert City. He then spent his time working part-time for the town, gardening, playing cards and going to the Albert City Thresherman Days.

Eldor and Anna were privileged to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary last December. At the end of December, they moved into the Pleasant View Home in Albert City. Anna passed away there on March 1, 2003.

Eldor passed away 14 weeks after his wife died, on June 7, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Eldor is survived by his three daughters: Judy and Ben Malcom, Jean and Del Carlson, all of Albert City, and Janet and Rick Meyer of Alta. Grandchildren: Ty and Jenni Malcom, Dubuque; Tiffany Malcom, Colorado Springs, CO; Tara Malcom, Storm Lake; Jennifer and David Reddel, Ankeny; Jill Carlson and fiancé Michael Loehr, Naperville, IL; John Carlson, Ames; Angela and Aaron Gillespie, Davenport; and Shane Meyer, Davenport. Great-grandsons: Alexander Gillespie, Davenport; and Carter Reddel, Ankeny. Brothers: Herbert Sump and his wife Clara; Wayne Sump and his wife Elnora. He was preceded in death by his wife Anna, his parents John and Mary Sump, brothers-in-law, Bill Wichman, Wilbert Sump, Ewald Franzmeier and his wife, Annie, Eldon Franzmeier and his wife, Darlene and sister-in-law, Lorna Franzmeier.

Eldor is now in the loving arms of His Savior and is greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Tom Egger officiating.
