Donald Piercy, Sr. - May 3, 1929 - June 26, 2003

Donald Piercy, Sr., age 74, of Newell died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota

Donald Wright Piercy was born in Newell, Iowa, on May 3, 1929, the son of Ernest and Florine (Wright) Piercy. He attended school in Newell and graduated from the Newell High School. He was engaged in farming for a number of years in the Fonda and Newell areas. He later moved to town and worked at the Newell Cooperative Elevator. Don was an active member of the community, being a member of the Newell Fire Department for 25 years, and serving on the Newell City Council for a number of years. Don was a member of the First Congregational Church in Newell and also served on the Church Board for many years.

Don married Marcella Dirks on October 1, 1950, in Fonda, Iowa.

Don enjoyed attending the many activities his grandchildren were involved in, gardening and visiting with his many coffee-shop friends and neighbors. He especially enjoyed spending his Sunday afternoons with his sister, Grace, and her husband Bill on their many escapades around the area.

Survivors include his wife Marcella, his daughters, Cathy and her husband Dale Sanders of Ankeny, Mary and her husband Larry Nissen of Storm Lake, and a son, Donald Piercy, Jr. and his wife Jean, also of Storm Lake; grandchildren Ben Sanders and wife Alison of Urbandale, Gary Sanders of Ankeny, and Olivia, Jace and Alanna Piercy of Storm Lake; great-grandchildren Peyton Sanders and Kayla Schuster of Urbandale; and his sister Grace, and her husband Bill Wessendorf of Newell; and many relatives and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his half-sister, June Parker.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 30th, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell with Pastor John Pinkerman officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery with The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements

Friends may call on Sunday anytime after 4:00 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell where the family will be present.
