Ethel G. Weiland - Sept. 30, 1908 - Nov. 14, 2005

Ethel G. Weiland, age 97, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, November 14, 2005 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Ethel Gertrude Sliefert was born September 30, 1908 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Fred and Hattie (Smith) Sliefert. She lived in rural Storm Lake with her family where she attended country school.

On March 8, 1928, Ethel was united in marriage to John Carl Weiland in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Frank, Leonard and Virginia.

Ethel worked at various restaurants over the years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Ethel took great pride and found much enjoyment in raising flowers. She especially loved when friends, neighbors and even strangers, passed by her home and praised her beautiful flowers. Over the years, Ethel was a true friend and neighbor. She was present during times of her friends’ sorrows and tragedies, lending support in any way she could.

In 1993, at the age of 85, Ethel moved into Methodist Manor as the result of a number of serious illnesses. She made this her home and treated the staff and residents as part of her family until her death. The staff and residents of Methodist Manor will always remember Ethel’s quick retorts to get across a point as well as her many stuffed animals she received from her friends and families.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Virginia Mae Bergner of Spencer, Iowa; grandchildren: Connie Wetherell, Julie Anderson, Allen Weiland, Dennis Weiland and Randy Weiland; several great grandchildren; one brother Lawrence Sliefert of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two sons, Frank and Leonard; three brothers: Alvin, Carl and Walter Sliefert; and two sisters Marian Sliefert and Mildred Shannon.

Memorial services will be held Friday, November 18, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. There will be no visitation.
