Ruth Leora Johnson - Jan. 3, 1912 - Jan. 12, 2008

Ruth Leora Johnson, age 96, of Linn Grove, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Iowa City, where she had lived and had been cared for by her family for the past 28 months.

Ruth Leora Anderson, the daughter of Ed and Laura Mae (Christeson) Andersen, was born January 3, 1912 at her parents’ home north of Alta in Scott Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. She attended Highview Consolidated School and graduated in 1929. She attended Buena Vista College for two years. She taught at Highview for 2 ½ years.

On May 9, 1934, she married Delbert Johnson of Albert City, Iowa at her parents’ home. They were blessed with one daughter, Nancy. The couple established their first home in Rembrandt, Iowa and later moved to a farm near Linn Grove, where they spent the majority of their married life. After Del’s death on Oct. 6, 1967, Ruth moved into Storm Lake, Iowa, where she lived until 1998 when she moved near her family in Iowa City. She lived at Ecumenical Towers and had many friends there. During October 2005, she became unable to live by herself and was cared for by her daughter and son-in-law at their home until her death.

Ruth was baptized and joined the Elk Baptist Church north of Alta. Later, she transferred membership to Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. She was active in Sunday School and Ladies Aid. Ruth was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and cooking. In the community, she was a 4-H Leader and belonged to various ladies’ clubs. She loved the many long phone calls she received every Sunday evening from her niece, Norma Zeeb.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Del; her parents, Ed and Laura Anderson; her twin sisters, Mavis Pederson and husband, Russell and Maesel Sweet and husband, Karl; her brother, Nathan “Bups” Anderson and wife, Eloise.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Macek and husband, Keith, of Iowa City; granddaughters: Cindy Miller and husband, Rob, and their children Ainsley and Peyton of Wellman, Iowa; Julie Miller and husband, Larry, and their children Zac, Mitchell, Alex and Brandon of Kansas City, Missouri; and Vicki Botkins and husband Brad of Olathe, Kansas; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. Burial will be in the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove, under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.
