Ruth M. (Johnson) Mackey - Oct. 18, 1930 - Mar. 24, 2008

Ruth M. (Johnson) Mackey, age 77, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, March 24, 2008, at the Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Ruth Marie Koebel, the daughter of Floreant and Mary (Shaffer) Koebel, was born at Fonda, Iowa, on October 18, 1930. Ruth lived her youth in the Fonda and Alta communities and was a 1948 graduate of the Alta High School.

Ruth was united in marriage to Elmer Johnson on September 5, 1953, at Cherokee, Iowa, and this couple was blessed with three children: Darnell, Jolene, and Jerry. Following their marriage, Elmer and Ruth resided in Alta, Rembrandt, and Fonda. Throughout her lifetime, Ruth had been employed as a truck driver, school bus driver, waitress, medical aide at a nursing home, and her last place of employment was the manager of the Lakeview Manor Apartments. Elmer died in December of 1976. Ruth married Matt Mackey on June 16, 1979, at Varina, Iowa. Ruth and Matt made their home in Fonda. Matt died in 1984. She moved to Storm Lake in the fall of 1984. In April, 2007, Ruth entered the Buena Vista Manor Care Center where she made her home until the time of her death.

Ruth was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Storm Lake and the American Legion Auxiliary. She will be remembered for her teddy bear collection, her enjoyment of bowling, and the special interest she took in quilting. Ruth’s family was a central part of her life and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and following their activities.

Those who will always cherish her memory include her children: Darnell Johnson of Storm Lake, Iowa, Jerry and Dianne Johnson of Storm Lake, Iowa, her two grandchildren: Darren and Emily Johnson, other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded by her parents, her two husbands, her daughter: Jolene, one brother: Leo Koebel, and one sister: Eileen Reely.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mackey will be held Saturday, March 29, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa.

Visitation will take place on Friday, March 28, 2008, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake with the family present during that time. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements.
