Grace Francis - July 17, 1908 - June 30, 2008

Grace Francis, age 99, of Sioux Rapids and formerly of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

L. Grace Horton, the daughter of W. Charlie and Ida E. (Burnette) Horton, was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, on July 17, 1908. She lived her youth and received her education in the Monticello and Somerset, Kentucky area.

Grace was united in marriage to E. Clem Francis on October 22, 1924, at Jeffersonville, Indiana, and to this union five children were born. Clem and Grace’s married lifetime was spent farming in the Linn Grove area. Clem died in 1982. Grace later resided at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake and became a resident of the Sioux Care Center on April 19, 2002.

Grace was affiliated of the Riverside Presbyterian Church, PCA in Linn Grove. Grace’s special interests included gardening, reading, cooking and quilting. She was honored in a newspaper article for the many beautiful quilts she had made and was given the honorary title of “Queen of the Quilts” in Linn Grove. Grace also was recognized for the beautiful gladiolas that she raised, and she graced many church altars, homes, and nursing homes with her flowers.

Those who will always cherish her memory include her son-in-law: Buck Hurley of Oak Island, North Carolina; two daughters-in-law: Jean Francis of Anoka, Minnesota and Phyllis Francis of Storm Lake, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clem; one daughter, Jean Hurley; four sons: Bruce, Jon, Joe and Ellis; four sisters: Ladonna Shearer, Emily Taylor, Rose Holstein and Frances Shearer; a grandson, Danny Hurley; and one daughter-in-law, Madonna Francis.

Services for Mrs. Francis will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Riverside Presbyterian Church, PCA, in Linn Grove. Pastor Russell Westbrook will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the start of services. Burial will be in Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove.
