Dale B. Larsen - Feb. 4, 1921 - July 13, 2008
Dale B. Larsen, age 87, of Spencer, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.
Dale Burdette Larsen, the son of Earl and Edith (Carlburg) Larsen, was born above his father’s hardware store at Sioux Rapids, Iowa, on February 4, 1921. He was the eldest of Earl and Edith’s three sons. Dale was baptized in the Congregational Church. He attended the Sioux Rapids Consolidated School, where he graduated from high school in 1938.
After completing studies at the Mankato Commercial College in 1939, he secured his first job with International Harvester in Mankato, Minnesota. He then worked with his father and uncle at Larsen Hardware in Sioux Rapids and opened a second Larsen Hardware Store in Linn Grove, Iowa, with his cousin, Frank Larsen.
Dale served his country in the United States Army from May 17, 1943 until January 5, 1946. Upon his enlistment, he became a part of the US Signal Corp attending Radio Transmitter School and Cryptography School. Dale was sent overseas to New Guinea and then onto the Philippine Islands, where he served as the chief code clerk in General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters. He worked with classified codes for all branches of the military. Dale was very proud of his military service and was honorably discharged from the service after 42 months of duty, including 26 months overseas.
Prior to his overseas tour of duty, Dale was united in marriage to Dolores Dailey in Sacramento, California in 1943. Following his honorable discharge, he and Dolores returned to Sioux Rapids, where he built the first of two homes (the other being at Lake Okoboji years later). He and his brother, Earl Gordon “Doc” Larsen operated a hamburger shop next to his father’s hardware store.
In 1948, the first of Dale’s four children (Judy, Barbara Jo, Nancy, and Joel) were born. Dale left the partnership with his brother in the restaurant business and joined Investors Diversified Services. He remained with that company for over 20 years, selling securities and investments, as well as training personnel. In later years, Dale lived in Mankato, Minnesota and Cedar Rapids, Mount Vernon and Lisbon, Iowa, before returning to Spencer to be near his family.
Dale was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer and enjoyed the fellowship with the congregation there. He also enjoyed fishing and golfing, especially with his nephew, Craig (Loraine) Larsen. He will be remembered as quite an adventurous cook.
Dale is survived by his former spouse, Dolores (Larsen) Modder of Mesa, Arizona; his three children: Judy (Don) Jones of Roseville, California; Dr. Nancy (Charisse) Larsen of Tacoma, Washington; Joel (Tina) Larsen of Ocheyedan, Iowa; four grandchildren: Carly Jones of Ventura, California; Amy Jones of Irvine, California; Adam (Jennifer) Larsen of Roseville, Minnesota; and Kyle Larsen of Ocheyedan, Iowa; his only great-grandson: Aedan Larsen of Roseville, Minnesota; his brother, Donald “Frankie” Larsen of Storm Lake, Iowa; a special nephew: Craig Larsen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two great-nephews, Zach and Robert Larsen; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Barbara Jo; and one brother, Earl Gordon (Marie) Larsen.
Memorial Services for Mr. Larsen will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Inurnment with full military rites will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids. No visitation is scheduled.
