Ruth Dahlstrom - Dec. 5, 1914 - Sept. 1, 2009

Ruth Dahlstrom, age 94, of Albert City, Iowa, died September 1, 2009 in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Ruth Gladys Pierson, the daughter of John R. and Jessie (Jones) Pierson, was born in Alta, Iowa, on December 5, 1914. She was baptized in a rural Linn Grove, Iowa, Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Ljunghed Lutheran Church in Albert City, Iowa. Ruth graduated at the age of 16 from Lincoln Lee Consolidated School, rural Albert City. After attending Buena Vista College for two years and earning an elementary teaching certificate, she taught for one year at Lincoln #4, rural Albert City, and then two years at Greenville Consolidated School in Greenville, Iowa.

On June 2, 1937, Ruth was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Carl Dahlstrom, at Ljunghed Lutheran Church in Albert City and this couple was blessed with four children: Paul, Judy, Linda, and Arnie. Ruth and Carl were life-long grain and livestock farmers, farming east of Albert City for nine years and then four miles west of town for nine more years. In 1955, they moved a half mile south to continue their love of the land and farming.

Ruth returned to teaching, first as a substitute teacher, while attending night and summer classes at Buena Vista College. She began teaching on a full time basis in 1964 in Marathon, Iowa, and graduated from Buena Vista College with her four year degree in 1969. She retired from teaching in 1979, but continued her passion for learning, teaching and helping through volunteering in the local school along with myriads of community and church activities. Ruth was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, L.C.W., and she had been active in assisting with Thresherman’s Association, and several clubs.

Ruth enjoyed working in her garden and was an avid reader. Ruth’s zest for life was inspired by her strong faith and by the love of her family and friends. Her life was exemplified by a positive and optimistic attitude and she is lovingly remembered for her wit and keen sense of humor.

Those who will always cherish Ruth’s life and gift of her memories include her family: Judy and her husband, Carl Mattes, of Humboldt, Iowa, Linda, and her husband, Reese Harris, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Arnie and his wife, Theresa, Dahlstrom of Albert City, Iowa, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren: Douglas (Kathy) Mattes and Issac and Tommy; David (Ann) Mattes and Sasha and Ethan; Steven (Lori) Mattes and Adam, Caleb, and Micah; Kari (Brian) Turnis and Haley and Nathan; Kim (Ryan) Cawelti and Emma; Matthew Harris; Brandon (Amanda) Dahlstrom; Aaron, Jacie, and Tim Dahlstrom; two sisters: Lucille Skog and Marjorie and her husband, Donald, Johnson all of Albert City; a sister-in-law: Florence Hanson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl, an infant son, Paul, three sisters: Hazel Pierson, Lela Braaks and Alice Lawson, and one brother: John V. Pierson; three sisters-in-law; and six brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 4, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, Iowa.
