Enola Porter - Nov. 1, 1912 - Apr. 5, 2009
Enola Porter, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.
Enola May Jensen was born on November 1, 1912, in Exira, Iowa to Andrew and Nettie (Hockenberry) Jensen. Enola lived her youth in Exira and Audubon, Iowa and received her education in Exira where she graduated from high school. She continued her education in nursing school in Atlantic, Iowa.
On April 4, 1934, Enola was united in marriage to George M. Porter at the Exira Christian Church, and they were blessed with three sons, Gailyn, Gerald and Merlyn, and one daughter, Mary Ann. Enola was employed as a nurse, and in 1947 George and Enola became the administrators of the Buena Vista County Home near Storm Lake until 1962. From 1962 until their retirement in 1976, the Porters were administrators of the Plymouth County Home. Mr. and Mrs. Porter also served as president and secretary of the Iowa County Home Administrators Association, visiting all 99 county locations.
Enola was an active member of the Church of Christ in Storm Lake since 1947, serving as a deaconess and was a member of several church circles. Enola’s special interests included her church work and enjoying her children’s activities.
Those who cherish her memory include her three sons: Gailyn (Charlotte) Porter of Scottsdale, Arizona; Gerald (Trilby Mammen) Porter of Elmhurst, Illinois; and Merlyn (Betty Illum) Porter of Marietta, Georgia; her daughter, Mary Ann (Kenny) Koopman of Columbus, Nebraska; ten grandchildren: Todd (Kelly) Porter, Tom (Raquel) Porter, Craig (Michelle) Porter, Paul (Christi) Porter, Kelley (John) Fonville, Kevin (Angel) Porter, Kandis (Fred) Cook, Kyle (fiancée Megan Swenson) Koopman, Kala (Dusty) Schlegel, Karla (Eric) Hall; 15 great-grandchildren: Travis, Cierra, Clayton, Trevor, and Shane Bourcier, Matthew, Michael, Jamie and Stephanie Porter, Marcus and Alexander Fonville, Caiden and Addison Porter, Justin, Jordan and Kristen Porter; and many other relatives and friends.
Enola was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Porter; her parents; and one brother, Marion Jensen.
Services for Mrs. Porter will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Exira Memorial Cemetery in Exira, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call at the funeral home for one hour prior to the start of services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Storm Lake Church of Christ or the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Hospice.
