Norman Thomsen - May 29, 1914 - May 30, 2009

Norman Thomsen, age 95, of Spencer, Iowa, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at St. Lukes Lutheran Nursing Home in Spencer.

Norman G. Thomsen was born May 29, 1914 in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Thorval and Dorothea (Andersen) Thomsen. He received his education at the rural country township School.

Norman was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Spencer and later confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa, where he served on the church council. Norman later joined Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove, Iowa.

He entered the United States Navy in 1942 and served during World War II. While in the Navy, Norman took machinery and mechanic classes. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On July 11, 1946, Norman married Helen Cleveland at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children: Gene, Mary Lou and Paul.

While wintering in Arizona for 20 years, Norman enjoyed playing golf. He had a passion for fishing, especially during his trips to Canada. He also loved spending time at the lakes in the Okoboji, Iowa area.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen; his children: Gene (Kathy) Thomsen; Mary Lou Hugen; Paul (Sheila) Thomsen; his brother, Gordon (Shirley) Thomsen; his grandchildren: Mark (Lisa) Thomsen, Jon Thomsen, Dirk Hugen, Erin Hugen, Alex (Leslie) Hugen, Joshua and Matthew Hugen, Jada Thomsen, Tyler (Jennifer) Thomsen, Kalli (Wes) Hunt, and Courtney Thomsen; extended family and friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Thorval and Dorothea Thomsen; his two sisters, Verna Carlson and Mae Teisinger; and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove. Burial will be in the Barnes Township Cemetery. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund in Norman’s memory for the Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp.
