Eldon Erickson - July 29, 1917 - May 28, 2009

Eldon Erickson, age 91, of Marathon, Iowa, died May 28, 2009 at Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Charles Eldon Erickson was born on July 29, 1917 on the family farm in rural Marathon, Iowa to Gust and Tillie (Cruthoff) Erickson. He was baptized in the Methodist Church and confirmed in the Grace Lutheran Church both of Marathon. Eldon attended grade school in Albert City and continued his education in the Marathon High School. After high school, he worked on the Fred McLaughlin farm until joining the Navy on January 30, 1942. Eldon was stationed on a PT boat in the South Pacific during World War II and served three years, eight months, and three days until his discharge on October 2, 1945.

On March 22, 1944, Eldon exchanged wedding vows with Margaret Schoon in Pomeroy, Iowa. This union was blessed with six children: Joyce, Nancy, Joel, Rodney, Chuck and Brad. Following his discharge from the Navy, Eldon made his living in agriculture and farming.

Eldon was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon and served as Chairman and board member of the Buena Vista County ASCS. He was a member of the Marathon Consolidated School Board and a Poland Township Trustee. Eldon was also a 60-year member, and past commander, of the American Legion Post 12. He enjoyed bowling, horse shoes, traveling, cards, and was an excellent cribbage player. He loved dancing with Margaret, was an avid baseball fan and longtime Cubs fan.

Eldon is survived by his wife Margaret of Laurens, Iowa; his children: Joyce (Phil) Westlund of Nampa, Idaho, Nancy Herzenach (Daniel Victor) of Tucson, Arizona, Joel (Barb) Erickson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Rodney Erickson of Des Moines, Iowa, Chuck (Vickie) Erickson of Marathon, and Brad Erickson of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; a sister, Helen Gross of Lakewood, Colorado; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended relatives.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lowell.

Services for Mr. Erickson will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Burial will follow at Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon, where American Legion Post 12 will present full military rites. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, at the funeral home in Albert City, where the family will be present.
