Jim lived his youth and received his education in Sioux Rapids, where he was a graduate of Sioux Rapids High School. He faithfully served his country during World War II in the United States Army in the European theatre. He was inducted into active service on November 14, 1945 and received his honorable discharge from Fort Dix, New Jersey on October 30, 1946. He had attained the rank of staff sergeant. Prior to his marriage, Jim had been employed with the Sioux Rapids Furniture Store and had also been a car salesman for Vic Schuelke Motors in Sioux Rapids.

On May 3, 1958, Jim was united in marriage to JoAnn Steffen in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children: Larry, Debbie, and Michael. Jim was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Following their marriage, Jim worked at the rendering plant in Linn Grove. Following his school employment, Jim worked for several years at Bil-Mar Foods in Storm Lake. In May of 1990, Jim began his retirement. He and JoAnn came to Royal to make their home in 1982.

Jim was a member of the Graeber-Rowe Sioux Rapids American Legion, where he served as the post chaplain for many years. He was also a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. In his spare time, you could find Jim enjoying his hobbies of fishing, hunting, throwing horseshoes, watching Chicago Cubs baseball games, and bowling.
