Leona G. Shaw - July 4, 1914 - Feb. 19, 2009

Leona G. Shaw, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, February 19, 2009, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center at Storm Lake.

Leona Georgia Potts, the daughter of George and Nellie (Matthews) Potts was born in Jerico Springs, Missouri on July 4, 1914. When she was a young girl, Leona moved with her family to the Storm Lake, Iowa area, where she received her education. Leona was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rembrandt, Iowa, in 1946.

On March 4, 1941, Leona was united in marriage to Omer N. Shaw. Following their marriage, Leona and Omer moved to California where Leona worked in the shipyards during World War II. Leona and Omer’s married lifetime was shared between Iowa and California. In the early 1960’s, Omer farmed in the Storm Lake area for Virgil Potts, and Leona was employed with Sunholm Manufacturing in Albert City. She had previously worked for Vilas in Storm Lake. Leona was a machinist by trade and retired on July 21, 1976. During her retirement, Leona purchased and remodeled many homes in the Storm Lake, Albert City, and Truesdale communities. Some of her favorite pastimes were bowling, playing cards—especially 500, and gardening. Leona loved her nieces and nephews very much, and she always took an active interest in their lives.

Those who will honor and cherish her memory include her brother-in-law and his wife, Carl and Isabelle Shaw of Storm Lake; her sister-in-law, Ethel Egertsen of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Omer; two brothers, Virgil and Clyde Potts; and one sister, Neva Haines.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Shaw will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Interment will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday for one hour prior to the start of the service.

The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements.
