Borghild Dvergsten - Nov. 25, 1909 - July 16, 2008
Borghild Dvergsten of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Borghild Dolve was born November 25, 1909 to William Dolve and Bertha (Lygresen) Dolve in Voss, Norway. At an early age, she and her parents immigrated to the United States and eventually made their way to Portland, Oregon. Borghild was the oldest in a family of five girls. As a young girl she was an avid skier and won several downhill events on Mount Hood. During WWII Borghild worked as a secretary in a shipyard where she met John Dvergsten, who was stationed at Vancouver Barracks, Washington. After the war, John and Borghild were married on July 15, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In January of 1947 they moved to Storm Lake where they established the Woman’s Shop which they operated for nearly 40 years. They were blessed with two children, David and Karen.
Borghild was a woman of integrity with a strong sense of responsibility to her family, her business and her community. She and John worked together for forty years and thoroughly enjoyed providing the Storm Lake area with quality fashionable merchandise.
Borghild was active in Wa-Tan-Ye and Business Professional Women and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. Borghild supported John in all of his community activities and enjoyed a long association with Buena Vista University.
In their retirement, Borghild enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to travel. She and John visited Norway on numerous occasions and enjoyed their winter home in Melbourne Beach, Florida. She had many fond memories of traveling the United States in their Airstream motor home and attending annual Airstream rallies.
Borghild was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters: Berly Sahler, Agnes Dolve and Mildred Walhood. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, John Dvergsten; her sister, Vivian Allison; her daughter, Karen, and her husband Robert Eichner; her son, David, and his wife Barbara; her grandchildren: Christian (Jessica) Dvergsten, Benjamin (Sarah) Dvergsten, Margaret Dvergsten, Matthew Eichner and Benjamin Eichner. Her great-grandchildren are Tyler Dvergsten, Samuel Dvergsten, Charles Dvergsten and Gabriel Dvergsten.
Memorial services for Mrs. Dvergsten will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2008 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend David Koehler officiating. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
A time of visitation will be held on Friday, July 20, 2008, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present to greet friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Mrs. Dvergsten’s honor.
