Janice L. Nelson, age 80, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Janice Lavonne Nelson was born May 10, 1928 on a farm in rural Alta, Iowa, the daughter of John Albin and Albertina (Rydstrom) Nelson. She was baptized at First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Janice was raised in the Storm Lake area and received her education in the Storm Lake Community School. She graduated from Storm Lake High in 1948.

Janice was a life-long member of First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, where she enjoyed her membership in the Women’s Circle. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake cookies to give to others. Janice had a great reverence for the beauty of God’s creation, and she loved to garden and especially grow flowers. For many, many years, she captivated readers of the Storm Lake Times with her genuine and heartfelt tales of life as a youngster growing up in the Storm Lake area during the Depression and post-Depression era. She often recalled that hardship was gently tempered by the love in her family. Janice’s kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Among those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Charlyne Van Oosbree of Jefferson City, Missouri; several nieces: Sherry Kiefer, Tina (David) Taylor, Karen (Jack) Webb, Barbara Halda, Denise (Brett) Davis; nephews John (Sally) Van Oosbree and David Van Oosbree; several great-nieces and great-nephews; extended family and friends.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, John and Albertina Nelson; her sister, Ardyce Sampers; and two brothers, Carroll and Loren.
