Paul H. Fredericksen, Sr., age 90, of Newell, Iowa, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.
Paul Harold Fredericksen was born November 9, 1918 in Alta, Iowa, the son of Nels and Sena (Mortensen) Fredericksen. He spent his youth in the Alta community. Paul was not able to attend school past the fourth grade. Because his parents both died, he was working for room and board by the time he was only 12 years old. He was employed by the Buena Vista County Road Maintenance department for many years until his retirement in November 1981.
Paul was a member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. He enjoyed having morning and afternoon coffee with his buddies in Newell during his retirement years. His faithful companion was his dog, Sugar, who he loved—and Sugar felt the same way about him.
Paul will be remembered as a devoted father and caring grandfather and great-grandfather. Paul, Jr. recollects that “I never heard anyone say anything bad about my Dad. I always wanted to be just like him.”
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Paul H. Fredericksen, Jr.; his daughter, Judy M. Fredericksen; grandchildren: Scott Ellwanger, Kara Toedtli, Brandon Fredericksen, Matt Fredericksen, and Nicole Giddens; great-granddaughter, Samantha Fredericksen; sister Doris Henricksen of Luck, Wisconsin; extended family and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Nels and Sena Fredericksen, and by his brother, Don Fredericksen.
Services for Mr. Fredericksen will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2009 at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in Elk Township Cemetery in rural Alta, Iowa. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the start of services on Monday. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
