Hertha H. Griffel - Feb. 04, 1918 - Apr. 11, 2009
Hertha H. Griffel, age 91, of Newell, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.
Hertha was born February 4, 1918 in Marian, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Millie (Eichhorn) Ahrendt. She was baptized on February 4, 1919 in Marian and confirmed her faith on October 4, 1931 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hendricks, Minnesota. Hertha attended school in Marian before her family moved to Hendricks, where she graduated from high school 1937.
Hertha was united in marriage to Alvis Kowalski in 1938. The couple was blessed with one daughter, JoAnn. On June 9, 1951, she married Dick Griffel at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa.
Hertha worked at Michael & Leonard Seed Corn Company, the Battery Company, Windcharge and Zenith Radio, all in Sioux City, Iowa. She was also employed at the Sundholm factory in Albert City and Spencer, both in Iowa.
Hertha was a devoted mother and loving grandmother. She was a devout Christian who loved her Lord dearly. Her kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, JoAnn (Charlie) Rasch of Newell; her grandchildren: Deb (Kaj) Overgaard of Newell; Cheri Krout of Spencer, Iowa; Karla (Gary) Pickhinke of Storm Lake, Iowa; Corey (Amy) Rasch of Bancroft, Iowa; her great-grandchildren: Christian Overgaard, Michelle Karpan, Nels Overgaard, Michael McKenna, Tyler Krout, Leslie Krout, Andy Pickhinke, Karina Overgaard, Marianna Overgaard, Kelsey Pickhinke, Karissa Rasch, Caleb Rasch and Colin Rasch; her great-great-grandson, Brayden Karpan; her brother, Lyle Ahrendt of Verndale, Minnesota; her sister, Eldonna (Art) Reed of Alexander, Minnesota; extended family and many friends.
Hertha was preceded by her two husbands, her parents, one brother, Maynard Aherndt, and one sister, Luella Wheeler.
Services for Mrs. Griffel will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to the start of services on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
