Jerome Wright - Feb. 08, 1930 - Apr. 13, 2009
Jerome “Jerry” Wright, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died of complications of Alzheimer’s and ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) on Monday, April 13, 2009 at Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.
Jerome Edward Wright was born in Storm Lake, Iowa on February 8, 1930, the son of Clarence and Nellie (McCabe) Wright. He was baptized in the Catholic faith as an infant at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake and later confirmed his faith in the same church as a youth. He attended school in nearby Sulphur Springs, where he graduated from high school in 1948.
Jerry, as he was known for most of his life, farmed after his high school graduation, before entering the United States Air Force on December 27, 1950. He served his country with honor until he was discharged on January 13, 1954.
On February 2, 1963, Jerry was united in holy matrimony to Ruth (Cole) Drey at St. Mary’s in Storm Lake. The couple raised six children together: Denise, Paul, Pat, Sue, Mike and Jim. Jerry was employed at Dyna-Electronics, later with the Storm Lake police department, and sold cleaning supplies for Puritan-Churchill Chemical Company for 26 years, retiring in 1992.
Jerry was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the V. F. W. in Alta. He was a great handyman who could fix almost anything. He enjoyed a good game of cards, especially “500” and could always be counted on to have a good joke ready for any occasion. An avid sports fan, Jerry handled the announcing chores at St. Mary’s High School baseball games for 12 years. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs, Notre Dame football, and the Green Bay Packers. Jerry and Ruth loved to go dancing, travel, and shared happy times on trips and cruises. A loving husband, devoted father and caring grandfather, Jerry treasured his family and the time he spent with them. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 46 years, Ruth Wright of Storm Lake; his children: Denise (Patrick) Fleming of Sioux City, Iowa; Paul (Nancy) Wright of Waverly, Iowa; Pat (Mel) Wright of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sue (Jay) Norgaard of Carroll, Iowa; Mike (Donna) Wright of Earlham, Iowa; and Jim (Cheryl) Wright of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren: Laura and Joe Fleming, Drew, Luke, Josh and Kate Wright, Lexi and Cole Wright, Will, Ben and Jacob Norgaard, Zach and Noah Wright, Alec, Katelynn, Shelbie and Amanda Wright; extended family and many friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe and infant Gerard; sisters: Mary (Melvin) McKenna, Pat (Chuck) Carney, Joanne (Romaine) Ryan; brothers-in-law: Pat Johnson and Ben LeMer; and nephews: Jace Wright, F.J. Carney and Scott Johnson.
