LaVern “Vern” Hott - Dec. 06, 1930 - Apr. 15, 2009
LaVern “Vern” Hott, age 78, of Lakeside, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
LaVern Chester Hott was born December 6, 1930 in Sac City, Iowa, the son of Chester and Cora (Stout) Hott. He was raised in the Sac City area and attended school in Sac City, where he graduated from high school with the Class of 1948.
Vern met the love of his life, Ardis Rose Gustafson, and married her on July 9, 1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four children: Cindy, Cori, Bud and John. Vern was one of the rare people who enjoyed going to work every day. He was employed for many years at Hy-Grade in Storm Lake and was also a master carpenter. Blessed with a kind and generous heart, Vern was a Boy Scout Leader and acted as caretaker for many people during their time of need.
Vern lived his life to the fullest, loved his wife and family dearly and treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He could repair almost anything and was known as “Mr. Fix-It” to his family and friends. He enjoyed cooking, baking and was a master at concocting the most delicious peanut brittle. Fishing was a favorite activity and Vern looked forward to his fishing trips to Canada. He was up for a game of cards with his kids anytime. Auctions and garage sales were like a magnet to him—he really enjoyed them.
Vern’s kind and caring ways will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cindy (Bruce) Melohn, his daughter, Cori (Craig) Melohn, and his son, Bud (LuAnn) Hott, all of Newell, Iowa; his son, John Hott of Richfield, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Justin (Theresa) Melohn of Newell, Iowa; Stacy (Jeff) Stief of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mitch (Clara) Melohn of Excelsior, Minnesota; Melissa (T.J.) Melohn of Excelsior, Minnesota; Chanda Hott of Hammond, Indiana; Kelly (Aaron) Brock of Irvine, California; and Nathan Hott of Iowa City, Iowa; great-grandchildren: Jordon Stief, Michael Melohn, Andrew Melohn and Noah Brock; sister Marie (Lee) Blessington of Sac City, Iowa; sister-in-law Addie Hott of Storm Lake; brother-in-law Howard Peters of Marshalltown, Iowa; friend Betty Albrecht of Fort Dodge, Iowa; extended family, many friends and neighbors.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Ardis; his brother, Phillip; and his sister, Barbara.
Services for Mr. Hott will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
