Dorothy Thayer - May 12, 1916 - May 11, 2009

Dorothy Thayer, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Dorothy Esther Hollister, the daughter of Hiram Niles Hollister and Edith Romaina Carman Hollister, was born May 12, 1916 in rural Hornick, Iowa. She received her education at Rodney, Iowa. Dorothy worked as a housekeeper before marrying Orville Robert Thayer on April 20, 1946. This union was blessed with a daughter, Connie, who was born on Dorothy’s birthday.

Dorothy was an active partner on the farm until Orville’s death on November 28, 1980. She enjoyed the farm animals and liked to watch the baby lambs and little calves. On one occasion, Orville and Dorothy went to separate sale barns to see if they could buy calves. Dorothy brought calves home, while Orville got none. She lived on the Thayer family farm for 63 years and taught her grandchildren about farm chores.

Dorothy liked to garden and raise vegetables for canning, and she raised flowers for her pleasure. She was a faithful advocate of her family’s activities. She was always there for Orville and did all she could to support Connie when she participated in horse shows, trail rides, parades and all her other horse events.

Dorothy loved good fried chicken and especially enjoyed the broasted chicken at Alta’s Parkway Drive-In. She never missed a Lawrence Welk Show if at all possible, and she liked to listen to polka music.

Above all, Dorothy loved her family and treasured the time she spent with them. When grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, they held a special place in her heart. She loved watching them grow up, and enjoyed the fact that she could help her grandchildren with their math homework. Dorothy and her four sisters were known for their visits when they would giggle together during their entire outing. Dorothy’s caring presence will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Connie (James) Watts of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Cheryl (David) Arnts of Alta, Iowa and Cory (Kristen) Watts of Storm Lake; seven great-grandchildren: Rachael, Matthew, Ethan, Jacob and Emily Arnts of Alta; and Abbie and Allison Watts of Storm Lake; extended family and many friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by per parents; her husband, Orville; sisters: Lela Harsh, Elsie Renshaw, Margie Harsh and Mina Moore; brothers: Orville Hollister and Hiram Hollister, Jr.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ila and Bill Boyd, Ray Harsh, Francis Renshaw, Curt Harsh, Roy Moore and Beatrice Hollister.
