Elsie Kischer, age 98, of Spencer, and formerly of Albert City, died Oct. 23, 2009 at Longhouse Residence Nursing Home in Spencer.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. Burial was in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.

Elsie Marie Hansen Kischer, daughter of Carl G. and Anna (Morck) Hansen, was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Story County. The family later moved, by train, to a farm Northeast of Ruthven. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of South Walnut, near Graettinger. She attended a rural one-room school through 8th grade. She then worked for a family for room and board to attend high school. She graduated from Ruthven High School in 1929 and attended the University of Commerce in Des Moines. She then began working at the Ruthven Creamery.

Elsie married Roy James Johnson on Jan. 5, 1935. To this union, a daughter Treva was born. They moved to Albert City in the early 1940's, where Elsie was employed by Superior Manufacturing. For 3 months she made artillery shells for the war effort. Then she moved to the office where she was the bookkeeper for 27 years. She worked from 7:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m., 5 days a week, and Saturday mornings till noon. She received 1 week of vacation a year.

Roy Johnson passed away in 1954, following a long illness. Elsie married Roy Kischer, Aug. 12, 1965. Following retirement, she was treasurer for St. John Lutheran Church, a member of the NW Aging Board, an election worker, and received The Governor's Volunteer Award in 1991. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, and Bible study. The highlight of her later years was a trip to Denmark with her sister, Doris and brother-in-law, Lester. They visited their cousins there and saw the church where their mother was baptized in 1886.

Elsie moved to Spencer, in 2002, where she resided at Sunset Apartments, and later Longhouse Nursing Home.

Even when things were difficult, she was the epitome of grace.

She is survived by her daughter, Treva Johnson of Spencer; her grandson, Dr. Richard Johnson and his wife Maureen of Appleton, Wisc.; her great-grandchildren: Jasmine, Julia, and Ross Johnson; many nieces and nephews; and the Romaine and Joyce Kischer family of Albert City.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; her brothers: Ray, Maynard, and Evertt Hansen; her sisters: Marilyn Hansen and Doris Randall Johnson; her nephew, Steve Hansen, and others.
