Tuesday, November 3, 2009Floyd Wendel, age 87, of Schaller, passed away Oct. 30, 2009 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. Burial was in the Schaller Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller was in charge of the arrangements.
Floyd Albert Henry Wendel was born on Feb. 22, 1922, to Albert and Matilda (Fett) Wendel on the family farm north of Schaller. He attended Country School near his home through 8th grade. He then started his lifelong career as a farmer. On Sept. 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Hilda Dorothea Augustin in Hay Creek, Minn. To this union six children were born. He served in the Marine Corp during World War II. He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. Floyd was an avid gardener. His family and friends enjoyed the tomatoes, cucumbers and raspberries. He also grew the most beautiful gladiolas and tulips. Some will remember how he liked to hunt asparagus every spring in the roadside ditches. He and Hilda were huge supporters of all their grandchildren's activities and events. They were their biggest fans. He also enjoyed the Clay County Fair each fall with family. Floyd enjoyed reading and watching football, baseball, car races, and Wheel of Fortune.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hilda of Schaller; his children: Phil Wendel of Galva; Barb (Jerry) Landmesser of Fort Dodge; John (Teresa) Wendel of Schaller; Liz (Richard) Noll of Sioux Rapids; and Laurie (Dan) Gaffney of Storm Lake; his grandchildren: Tonya Wendel of Alta; Jesse (Jessica) Wendel of Sioux Rapids; Aaron Wendel of Janesville; Nick (Trina) Landmesser of Dubuque; Brittany Landmesser of Ames; Nicole and Shelley Wendel of Schaller; Tyler Wendel of Des Moines; Adam Noll of Sioux Rapids; Brooke, Madison and Austin Gaffney of Storm Lake; his great grandchildren: Haven and Brian Chase and Holton Falck of Alta; Carson Wendel of Schaller; his sister, Arletta Stille of Sac City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; extended family and friends. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Anita; and two sisters, Ruth Witte and Bernetta Wogahn.
