Nadine Parker Dlugosch Cavanaugh Oct. 2, 1925 - Nov. 20, 2009
Tuesday, November 24, 2009Nadine "Dee Dee" Parker Dlugosch Cavanaugh, age 84, of Omaha, Neb. and formerly of Denver, Colo. and Storm Lake, passed away Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at Brookestone Village in Omaha.
Funeral Mass was held Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverends Bruce Lawler, Paul-Louis Arts, and Alfred McCoy concelebrating the Mass for Christian Burial. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Storm Lake under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Nadine is survived by her daughters: Mary Ellen (Jack) Wilhelmi, Linda (Dan) Connell, and Jane McMahon (Edward Neibauer); grandchildren: Don Shimmin, Caroline Connell, Katie, Allison and Meghan McMahon; step-grandchildren: Nate (Olga) Wilhelmi, Angela Wilhelmi, Molly Connell (Doug) Crosby, Amy Connell (Steve) Hilmes, Danny Connell and their children; step-sister Ruth Pruett Mohr; brother-in-law Paul (Birdie) Dlugosch; numerous nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Don L. Dlugosch and Ed Cavanaugh; her parents, Mary Ellen Parker Pruett and Alexander Parker; step-father, John Pruett; her sisters: Genevieve Parker Wedeking and Ruth Parker Mooney; and her brothers-in-law, E. H. "Shorty" Wedeking and Marvin Mooney.
Nadine was born Oct. 2, 1925 in Nemaha, and graduated from Nemaha High School in 1944. She was employed at the telephone office in Nemaha during her high school years, and later moved to Storm Lake, where she was employed at Dumbaugh's clothing store.
Nadine was united in marriage to Don L. Dlugosch on April 30, 1945, until his death in 1965. Together they raised three daughters: Mary Ellen, Linda and Jane, and enjoyed their home on the lake. She was later married to Ed Cavanaugh until his death in 1971. She lived most of her life in Storm Lake, where she was a member of St. Mary's Parish. She was actively involved in the Catholic Daughters of America and the Ladies' Guild. She spent numerous hours volunteering at St. Mary's School, which her daughters attended.
During the tenure of Iowa Governor Harold Hughes, Nadine was appointed to the Commission on Health and Aging. She completed the development of Bel Air Beach, which was started by her late husband, Don L. Dlugosch, and renovated and built several buildings in Storm Lake. Nadine was directly involved in the original Lake Preservation Project.
She was an energetic homemaker who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Nadine also cherished time spent on family vacations with her children and grandchildren. She lived in Denver, Colo., for 12 years and retired to Omaha, Neb., in 1995.
Nadine was an active participant in her daughters' and grandchildren's lives. She enjoyed attending their school activities, recitals, sporting events and special occasions. She treasured every moment spent with them and especially enjoyed decorating, cooking and baking for family holidays.
Nadine was warm, loving and kind to everyone she met. She was a gracious and gentle lady who will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her elegant style, her fun-loving personality, and her deep faith in God.
