Sara Sorenson, age 29, formerly of Fort Dodge and Sioux City, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City with Rev. Greg Baskerville officiating.

Sara Beth Sorenson was born March 1, 1980 at Iowa City, to Thomas Sorenson and Sue Rhodes. She graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1999. Growing up, Sara enjoyed riding her bicycle, swimming at Olson Pool, playing Uno, joking around and 
spending time with family and friends. She was also in girl scouts, a wrestling mat-maid, and the upward bound program. Her favorite color was blue, she enjoyed listening to Christian music, her favorite saying was "...but mom," and she was an avid Hawkeye fan. Shortly after high school, Sara suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling off of a bicycle. She spent the next few years, re-learning the basics of life at On With Life in Ankeny, and Opportunities Unlimited in Sioux City. She worked hard to gain her independence and learn new skills. She participated in the Opportunities Unlimited day-work program and helped with various projects including The Jumpy Monkey Coffee Bean operation and the OU Staff Newsletter. While in Sioux City, Sara was featured in a television news segment on KTIV News Channel 4 about brain injury. Sara strived to tell others, especially children, the importance of wearing a safety helmet. After living in Sioux City for seven years, Sara moved into her own apartment in Lake City, and participated in the work program through Opportunity Living. She enjoyed living on her own and making new friends. In April, Sara was diagnosed with a brain tumor and her health declined.

Sara is survived by her mother, Sue Sorenson of Storm Lake; sister, Mary Ludwig (Bret) of Sac City and nieces Tyrei, Tristin and Emerson; brother, Joe Sorenson (Sandy) of Wichita, Kan. and nieces, Julianna and Oakley; grandparents, Peggy and Daryl Heim of Lake City, grandfather, Joe Rhodes of Owensboro, Ky., and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Sorenson; grandmother, Betty Lou Rhodes; and grandfather, Andrew Sorenson.
