Hi, would your William happen to have a brother named John Lawless? In my data, I have a John Lawless b. Jan. 1839 OH d. 1909 in Walker, IA; m. to Emeratta Elnor Shaffer January 19, 1873 in Brandon, Buchanan Co., IA. (his first wife was Hattie Van Skike)
I thought it might be a good chance that John and your William were brothers, especially since John named one of his son's William Benton Lawless (b. 23 Oct. 1873)
