James A. Burns, 73, of Winthrop, IA, died on Thursday, December 12, 2024, surrounded by family.

James was born on April 26, 1951, in Independence, IA, the son of Kenneth and Marjorie (Heiserman) Burns. He was raised on a farm outside of Strawberry Point, IA. He graduated from Starmont High School with the class of 1969. On November 4, 1977, he was united in marriage to Sheri Marie Tekippe in Independence, IA.

Jim and Sheri made their home and raised their girls in Winthrop, IA, Jim worked for the City of Winthrop for thirty years; throughout his life he also worked with many friends tiling, excavating, farming, and driving truck. Jim’s hard work ethic was displayed in all that he did and is something he instilled in his daughters.

Jim enjoyed various hobbies such as golfing, fishing, bowling, and riding motorcycles. He could always be found tinkering in the garage and knew a solution to fix almost everything. He was a devoted Papa to his grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Sheri Burns of Winthrop, IA; three daughters, Julie (Randall) Stanford, Grimes, IA, Jean (Rodney) Decker, of State Center, IA, and Joanna (Ryan) Ruffcorn of Independence, IA; seven grandchildren: Avri and Anna Ruffcorn, Jack and James Decker, and Leighton, Ryan and Grant Stanford. He is also survived by his siblings, many nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, a nephew, and a beloved dog, Neifi.

The family offers their sincere thanks to the staff at ABCM Rehabilitation Center in Independence and Cedar Valley Hospice for the care that was provided for Jim and the comfort they provided to the family.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Winthrop, IA.

Inurnment will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Winthrop, IA. Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM on Wednesday, December 18th at the funeral home in Winthrop.
