Mary A. Walztoni, 82, of Independence, IA, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West campus in Independence, IA.

Mary was born on August 20, 1942, in Independence, IA, the daughter of Amel J. and Anna A. (Schmitkonz) Melvin. Mary is a lifelong resident of Independence and was a 1960 graduate of Independence High School. In 1961, Mary married Donald J. Walztoni, they made their home in Independence, and they had four children together. They were later divorced. Mary started working as a switchboard operator at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, in 1977. She made many friends over her twenty-seven years working there, and often knew about everything that happened on the grounds of the MHI. Mary finally retired in 2004.

Mary loved her family. While raising her children, their friends called her the “Fun Mom”. Mary was extremely active in raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always wanted to be around to help her family with whatever they needed. She never missed a school or sporting event, and always cheered them on.

She is survived by her children, Machelle (Paul) Straw, Central City, IA, Tim (Heather) Walztoni, Cedar Falls, IA, Cynthia Walztoni and Scott (Cassie) Walztoni, both of Independence, IA, twelve grandchildren, thirty-nine great grandchildren, a brother Jim Melvin, Janesville, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Amel and Anna Melvin, a brother Bill Melvin, a sister, Barb Siggelkove and a son-in-law, Mike Clinton.

Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 8 PM on Friday, October 25, 2024, and Saturday October 26th from 9 AM until 11 AM at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 Am on Saturday, Oct 26th at the funeral home.
