Daniel Ray McGrew, 71, of Independence, IA, formerly of Sumner, IA, died on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Mercy One Medical Center in Waterloo, IA.

Daniel was born on May 4, 1953, in Evansville, IN, the son of Oran and Laura (Olds) McGrew. He attended the Evansville Community Schools and in the mid-1960s, the McGrew family moved to Sumner, IA. Daniel grew up there and loved volunteering in the community.

In 2009, Daniel made his home in Independence, IA. He worked for several years at North Star Community Services in Waterloo, IA and Goodwill in Independence, IA. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Buchanan County Court House.

Daniel will be remembered for his fun-loving personality. He enjoyed playing the piano at the Daryl Davis Day Center in Independence. He collected VHS tapes, and vinyl records. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He also was the best uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle, and great-great-great-uncle anyone could ask for.

He is survived by a niece, LaVonne Wendel, Oelwein, IA., and many great nieces and nephews.

Daniel is preceded in death by his parents, Oran and Laura McGrew, a sister Nancy Davis, and a nephew, Martin Wendel.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Wilson – Grove Cemetery in Sumner, IA. Then a Celebration of Life will be held from 1 PM until 5 PM on Thursday October 3rd at First Ward Park in Independence, IA. The Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
