Evelyn J. Marter, 99, of Oelwein, Iowa, died Monday morning, September 30, 2024, at Arlington Place Assisted Living in Oelwein.

Evelyn Josephine Sachtschale was born on October 18, 1924, in rural Hazleton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry Joseph and Maude Inez (Grieger) Sachtschale. She graduated from Independence High School in the Class of 1941. Evelyn married Mervin Charles Marter on March 12, 1943, in Waterloo, Iowa.
They later divorced. Evelyn married Roy Rodgers in August of 1950 in Wisconsin. Roy died on May 13, 1967. Evelyn re-married Mervin Charles Marter on November 3, 2001, in Oelwein.

Over the years, Evelyn was employed in the office at Rath Packing, at Canteen Service, Investors Diversified Services and Waterloo Valve Spring Compressor Company (Waterloo Industries). She was the first deputy in the Waterloo Assessor’s Office. Evelyn retired January 1, 1987, and moved to Oelwein. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Arlington, Iowa.

Evelyn is survived by Mervin’s daughters: Ruth (Daryl) Nigon of Rochester, Minnesota and Jackie (Kevin) Kohlmeyer of Rochester, Minnesota; Roy’s daughter: Phyllis Kelsey of Eddyville; and their families; and sister: Gertrude (Louis) Fischels of Independence.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Roy and Mervin; 4 sisters: Isabelle Preble, Marie Summers, Alice Behm and Margaret Fischels; and a brother: Henry Sachtschale, Jr.

Funeral Service: 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 4, 2024, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, with Rev. Scott Hall officiating.
Visitation: 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Interment: 11:30 A.M. Monday, October 7, 2024, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Viola, Minnesota.
