Gary William West, 78, of Independence, IA died on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at the Hiawatha Care Center of natural causes.

Gary was born on July 21, 1943, to Earl and Gladys (Gregerson) at the Fred Wagner farm near Elkader, IA. Gary graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1961. Gary retired from the Weyerhaeuser Paper Company in 1999 after 20 years of service. He worked for Larson Construction Company for ten years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and going to auctions. He took great pleasure just sitting on his deck with his dog and cat listening to the waterfalls in his yard pond and feeding the fish.

Gary is survived by his wife of thirty-one years, Jane West, two daughters, Tami (Chris) Clarke, Tara (John) Breon, and step-daughter, Renee (Tim) Rasmussen, his grandchildren, Brittany (Matt) Strope, Andrew Clarke, Nate and Nick Breon, and Kylee (Dylan) Kinyon, step grandchildren, Tyler (Megan) Rasmussen, Zac (Ellen) Rasmussen, Derick (Shauna) Rasmussen, Ryan (Kaidy) Rasmussen, and Renee Rasmussen (California), ten great grandchildren, and two sisters, Sharon Larson and Shirley (George) Tupy, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lyle and Earl Gene West.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at the Reiff Family Center in Independence, IA. Burial will be held at St. John’s Cemetery in Independence. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the service at 11 AM

The family asks that those who plan on visiting or attending the service to please wear face masks.
