(Lula) Jean Reinert, 87, of Oelwein died Friday, March 25, 2011 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, at Oelwein Healthcare Center where she had resided the last 5 years.

(Lula) Jean Shirley was born in rural Queen City, Missouri on April 29, 1923, (along with her twin sister Lucretia who died at birth). She was the third child in a family of 13 children. Her family struggled during the depression and she learned how to be frugal and stretch a dollar. Her family moved to the Blakesburg, Iowa area where she graduated from high school. After high school Jean went to comptometer school and worked for the railroad in Oelwein, where she met her future husband Donald Reinert at a dance for young people. They were married on October 3, 1953 in Oelwein. They moved to Ralston, Nebraska in 1963-65 and then returned to Oelwein where they owned and operated Oelwein Furniture Mart and later JR Pawn Shop.

Jean was a stay at home mom, enjoyed raising a big garden and canned and froze much of the garden produce. She was very involved in the Grace United Methodist Church, teaching 2nd grade Sunday school for many years and was very active in the United Methodist Women. Jean was a Girl Scout and a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her children Tom (Kelly) Reinert of Oelwein, Kathy (Bill) Butler of Eldora, Jerry (Joyce) Reinert of Versailes, MO, Jeff (Lynn) Reinert of Oelwein, Joel (Janet) Reinert of Manchester; her grandchildren: Jonathan, Adam, Levi, Todd, Katie, Evan, Beth, Hilary, Elise, and Alex Reinert, Billie Reinert Schmitt, Amy Reinert Seegers, Kellie Butler Smith, Ryan Butler, Lindsay Butler Eekhoff and 12 great-grandchildren.

In death, Jean has rejoined her husband Don, grandson Nick, her parents Paul and Isabel Shirley, her sisters Lucretia and Ruth, and her brothers Lawrence, John and Ben.

Visitation will be 4-7 PM Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein.

Funeral Services will be 11 AM Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein with Rev. Darwin Moore officiating. Inurnment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at a later date.
