William Robert Mundt

William Robert Mundt was born on July 6, 1928 in Oelwein, Iowa the son of William Emil and Leona Melva (Richard) Mundt. Bill received his education from the Oelwein Schools. He moved to Waterloo in 1944 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1946. Bill went to communication school in San Diego, California and then Las Cruces, New Mexico. He repaired and maintained telephones and field communications systems from January of 1947 to July of 1948. Bill moved to Waterloo where he worked for Petersen Electric and then John Deere. In Waterloo he met Shirley Mae Power and they were united in marriage on July 1, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bill then moved his family to Rock Island, Illinois where he worked for International Harvester. On March 1, 1961, the family moved to Van Nuys, California where Bill worked for several electrical contractors. He began working for the I.B.E.W. Union in 1963, moving to Woodland Hills, California in 1964 and then to Thousand Oaks, California in 1969. Bill worked for the union for 25 years, retiring in 1988. On December 1, 1989, Bill and Shirley returned to Oelwein.

Bill was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein, where he had served as Post Commander, Past Sergeant at Arms and Past Finance Officer. Bill was the president of the Hub City Heritage Corporation. He was formerly a member of the Oelwein Chamber of Commerce and Area Development. Bill enjoyed woodworking.

Bill is survived by his daughter: Cherie (Eugene) Parrish of Oelwein; 5 grandchildren: Tiffany Rhoades, Shawn Parrish, Gabrielle Mundt, Devon Mundt and Chris Mundt; 4 great grandchildren: Cheyenne, Cody, Crystal and Chase; 1 great-great granddaughter: Charlotte; brother: Bert (Dorothy) Mundt of Jacksonville, North Carolina; sister: Bernice (Jack) Snyder of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Shirley on December 12, 2013; 2 sons: Donald and Terry; and 5 brothers: Paul, Dale, Virgil, Larry and Raymond; and a sister: Margaret Monteith.
