Eugene W. “Gene” Buhr, 73, of Winthrop, Iowa died Tuesday afternoon, July 14, 2020 as the results of a lawn mowing accident in Independence, Iowa.

Eugene Wayne Buhr was born December 28, 1946 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Frank & Grace Lucille (Moeller) Buhr. He received his education from the Sumner School. Gene worked with his father on the family farm near Sumner until he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. He received a purple heart and silver star while serving his country.

Gene was united in marriage to Eileen Kay Buckman on June 22, 1975 in Hazleton, Iowa. Gene has owned and operated Gene’s Autobody in Winthrop since 1983. He also worked as a mail handler at the Waterloo Post Office from 1991 to 2009. In his spare time, Gene enjoyed fishing with his children and granddaughter and playing with his dog, Waylon.

Gene is survived by his Wife of 45 years: Eileen Buhr of Winthrop;4 Children: Denise Gravedoni of Cedar Rapids,Brad Buhr of Winthrop,Ariel Buhr of Winthrop and Austin Buhr of King George, Virginia;
Granddaughter: Kaylana Buhr of Cedar Rapids; Mother: Grace Buhr of Oelwein; 3 Sisters:Jolane Buhr of Pennsylvania, Karla Gray of Aurora, Illinois and Karma (Mark) Roberts of Durant;3 brothers: Larry Buhr of Sumner,Rick (Annette) Buhr of Waterloo & Ronald Buhr of California;
2 Sisters-in-law: Vickie Buckman of Hazleton;
Mary (Dale) Rueber of Westgate.Numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Very Special Friends: Meg & Brian Cooly of Monona.

Gene was preceded in death by his father; parents-in-law: James and YuVonne Buckman and a brother-in-law: Robert Gray.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing will be required. Those in attendance are encouraged to wear a mask at the funeral home. We encourage relatives and friends not able to attend the service to reach out to the family by leaving a message on the funeral home web site, by mail, text or phone.

Funeral Service and Visitation are pending at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.

Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein with military honors.
