James A. Schmitt, 92, of Independence, Iowa died Thursday morning, January 28, 2016 at the ABCM Rehabilitation Center’s East Campus in Independence, Iowa.

Jim was born on August 25, 1923 near Dewar, Iowa the son of Oscar C. and Dorothy R. (Ward) Schmitt. He attended the Waterloo Schools, then entered the US. Army on March 24, 1943 serving till his discharge on January 24, 1946 at which time he returned to the Waterloo area. On May 30, 1947 he married Darlys J. Schmidt in Waterloo where the couple made their home until moving to Independence, IA in 1971 and farmed until his retirement in 1987. Jim also was a salesman for the Waterloo and Waverly, IA John Deere Implement Company’s.

He enjoyed farming, golfing, target shooting collecting guns, and most of all spending time with his family giving rides on the tractors and ATV’s.

He is survived by his wife Darlys Schmitt, Independence, IA, three children; Brad (Peggy) Schmitt, Oelwein, IA, Beth (Randy) Goodenbour and Jeanne (Le) Tonn both of Independence, IA. A daughter-in-law Pam Schmitt, Cedar Falls, IA. Seven Grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A sister Margaret (Lloyd) Harp and a brother Tom (Janice) Schmitt all of Waterloo, IA.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a son Greg Schmitt, and a sister Frances Widdel-Bridges.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Am Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, IA, with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating.

Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery, Independence, with full military honors. Friends may call from 2 to 6 PM Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 9 AM till services Monday at the church.
